I did however want to write about Halloween while it still makes sense to. I don’t want people to be reading the week of Thanksgiving about our Halloween here at the Haas household. Many of you may not know this but Halloween is my all time favorite holiday. Mostly because we get to spend it at home and not running around from family to family the way we do during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Then there is the fact that Halloween is truly a kid’s holiday. People may say that about Christmas, but who are they kidding. These same people know that they are expecting that perfect gift as well. Then Thanksgiving is totally about the adults, most kids could care less about eating turkey. On every holiday I do incorporate history because every holiday has history behind it, and it is the teacher in me to let my kids know about it. I think it was my sneaky way of celebrating the holidays in the public school system, I could say, “We were just studying history”.
This Halloween was so much fun. I love when it falls on a weekend. We can spend the whole day cooking, roasting seeds and carving the pumpkin while we read Halloween books and watch Halloween movies. This year we added a little spin which turned into the, “great search of the pumpkin”, on Halloween day. Don’t ask why we waited, because I am not even sure. We did have a perfectly rotten pumpkin that had been sitting on the porch since October 1st, but I don’t think it would have been the best for carving, due to the fact that when I picked it up it fell apart. Not a good sign. Off we went to the store. The day before they had hundreds of pumpkins, so we figured that they would still have some, but after four visits to different stores they were all out. We begin to just drive around. I don’t know what we were looking for, a random pumpkin truck or someone who accidently left their pumpkin on the side of the road, maybe. Then we see it, a sea of orange, a pumpkin patch, and they have pumpkins. We turn in, but they are closed, of course. They did open later that day and we did get a great pumpkin. My husband said he remembered about this pumpkin patch the entire time, if he did, that was a nasty little trick.
On to the costumes. My kids plan out there Halloween costumes months in advance. They are the most creative ideas to, and they come up with them all on their own. My oldest, Luke, age 5, decided he wanted to be a, get this, Christmas tree (who ever said Halloween was not religious, has not met my son). When in fact it actually is a religious holiday anyways, yes my kids know that, and we talk about the religion behind Halloween. I do agree, along with just about all the other holidays people have lost sight in why we celebrate these days in the first place, and more often than not they do not even know why they are celebrated, but that is a whole other story. Back to the Christmas tree, yes, I made it. It was my first attempt at making a costume from scratch, and I must say it turned out very well, with twinkling lights and everything.
My youngest son, age 3, decided that he wanted to be an Orange Aggie Football Player. Now we live in Texas and my husband and I both went to Texas A&M, the color is maroon, NOT orange. We are aware that the color orange is of the rival team over in Austin, the Texas Longhorns. This small detail did not seem to bother Will. He just knew that he liked the Aggies and he liked orange, so why not put them together. I was all for it, but when I went to research getting a jersey made, I changed my mind. It was going to cost 60 bucks, just for the jersey. At this time I talked him into being a maroon Aggie football player, he bought it, and that is what he was, thank God!
As for me, I am usually a witch. I know, I know, I tell you how much I love Halloween and then I go and dress up as the same thing every year, but like I said it is all about the kids. This year, however, the kids wanted me to dress up as something different. So, I did. I attempted to make my second costume of all times and it turned out pretty well too.
After the last trick-or-treater left at 10pm (yes, I thought that was kind of late too), the lights went off and we had our own adult celebration without the kids, but I won’t go into any details about that part. It did involve finishing a pitcher of bright green margaritas.
Hope everyone had a Happy Halloween, and if you have not been to the stores yet, go! All the Halloween stuff is at least 50% off. I am all ready for next year!
